MOCAPPE – Gamification part of Sports & Well-Being Analysis

Rovaniemi's educational providers are increasing their use of MOCAP environments

Motion Capture (MOCAP) is a technology that captures and stores movement in a virtual form, which allows the movement data to be analyzed and modified. In Rovaniemi, motion data capture is utilized in the development environments of every major educational institution. Lapland University of Applied Sciences, the University of Lapland and SantaSport Sports Institute have joined forces in the MOCAPPE project, where environments and their technologies are researched and developed in a cross-cutting manner within the themes of exercise, well-being and virtual experiences.

The project investigates how the user experience of MOCAP and XR technologies could be facilitated, and how the technologies can be fully utilized in their usage environments in Rovaniemi. The cooperation of diverse actors (RDI, entrepreneurs & sports and coaching education) will facilitate the learning and implementation of technologies in the development of each individual’s own activities. These development activities will be implemented in two work packages:

  1. Sports Games –  SportsLab and Testing & Training environments
    – Implementers: LapUAS and SantaSport
  2. Ergonomics of physical activity and well-being and design of VR experiences
    – Implementer: University of Lapland

The testing environments located at Santasport focus on producing sports game solutions that test perceptual motor training, performance measurement, technique training and coaching perspectives. The XRLab of the University of Lapland investigates VR experiences in the field of physical activity and well-being in the form of POC outputs.

The project aims to create innovative, ready-to-use pilots and proof-of-concept demos that enable new gamified sports performances, analysis of ergonomics of movement paths, and virtual experiences related to exercise and well-being. At the same time, the competence of MOCAP and XR technologies is developed regionally in cooperation with experts, competence groups and user groups, so that the technologies are accessible and easily usable.

The total budget of the project is €999,847, of which the EU funding share is €799,874 (80%) and the project implementers’ own funding shares are 20%.
