Lapland Robotics

Experiments with Robotics, AI and Digital Twins in companies

In the joint project of the University of Lapland and the Lapland University of Applied Sciences, Lapland Robotics, the goal was to carry out experiments with robotics, artificial intelligence and digital twins suitable for the needs of SMEs and to find out the operating models and scaling potentials required by these solutions. The project investigated the current status of technology and service models and created a plan for the utilization of different technologies in different fields.

Lapland Robotics is the predecessor of the AI.R project. The ARC team built winter-proof mobile robots from the ground up. Winter tools were added to the robots and Digital Twins were included in robot testing. The project investigated how robots could help in arctic regions; not only on the ground, but also with drones, for example in search and rescue operations.

The output of the project was open information about prototypes of unmanned robots, which were tested in field conditions together with companies and users. In addition, the project produced digital twins, i.e. precise virtual environments where the robots’ functions could be simulated and tested before field conditions.
