This ECSEL Joint Undertaking-funded CHARM project develops ECS (Electronics, Components & Systems) predictive maintenance, automation, condition monitoring, real-time production control and its optimization, virtual prototype systems and their testing in real industrial conditions.
In the project, FrostBit investigates the utilization of Unreal Engine 4 and the CARLA simulator in simulating mining conditions and mining situations. In the project, we implement a Digital Twin based on real world data measured from the tunnel, as well as a tunnel environment creation tool, which can be used to quickly and easily create varying simulation environments with different props and conditions. Interfaces for data transfer are developed between the simulation and external systems, which make it possible to transfer sensor data out of the simulation and also to transfer, for example, vehicle control commands to the simulation. During the project, other possible ways to effortlessly generate different environments with the help of point cloud data are also being explored.

The CHARM project has a total of 37 partners from ten different countries who demonstrate industrial ECS solutions through six use cases. The use cases focus on six industrial sectors: mining, paper mills, machining, solar panel manufacturing, nuclear power plant maintenance and decommissioning, and professional digital printing. The project consortium represents the entire industrial value chain.
This project has received funding from the ECSEL Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 876362. The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and Finland, Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland.
